Although it’s been several years since Rhett Dashwood accomplished this task, we think it’s still interesting enough to share it for one more time. If you missed the original story about the Google Maps alphabet, you might want to continue reading.
Rhett is a designer from Australia who thought Google Maps might contain each and every letter of English alphabet hidden right there in the satellite view. No, he never tried to zoom in peoples’ homes to find those letters in books (at least we think so), but he decided to find letters hidden in landmarks. Whether there was a treeline shaped as a letter, a house, bridge or the entire mountain, Rhett was eager to find it.
Like the task itself wasn’t challenging enough, Rhett restricted himself on the satellite view of Victoria, Australia. Although Victoria covers more than 90,000 mi², this fun project was quite a hard one to finish. And if you think Rhett used a script to find suitable shapes or that maybe he found a hack which would help him, you couldn’t be more wrong. He spent 6 months scanning Google Maps. Image by Image. Letter by letter.
In the following lines, we’re about to show you the result of his project. First, you can find links to each and every letter which will lead you to a custom Google Map that Rhett created. Below that, you can see the entire collage made up of the 26 letters found on the satellite view. Enjoy!
